Thai collection in Japan: Collecting and describing practices
Thai cultural institutions, such as libraries, archives, and museums, have been seldomly involved and engaged with the development of global bibliographic standards. Therefore, a majority of these institutions in Thailand have limitations in terms of sharing collections to international collaboration networks due to lack of unified domestic guidelines and standards and therefore have developed their own unique ways to deal with in-house collections.
On the other hand, there is a polarity of how institutions outside of Thailand collect Thai materials while are more receptive in adopting Anglo/Eurocentric metadata standards. The catalogs of collections outside of Thailand are, in general, varied and influenced by various sociocultural norms and institution prioritization.
Consequently, the variety of approaches in acquiring and describing Thai materials inside and outside of Thailand has a great impact on the accessibility of these collections. Scholars in relevant fields of study such as Thai Studies and Southeast Asian Studies have faced tiresome challenges to discover, locate, and access relevant materials.
Inevitably, these challenges have subsequently biased the construction of knowledge.
Japan is one of a few Asian countries that has distinctive national bibliographic standards and culture while have also actively been participated and efficiently adopted international standards. While at CSEAS, I am planning to to explore the extent of Thai materials being held by cultural institutions in Japan. Also, the study aims to investigate how Thai collections are appraised, acquired, and described by Japan cultural institutions. The results from this study would shed some light on the influences of outsider’s worldview that underlie the acquisition and description practices of materials from less dominant cultures. This study is a part of a broader research journey to understand the complexity of social justice issues in information practices.
